How we define camping
Before you get into the directory, we thought it would be helpful to define camping.
Camping, as used on this platform, refers to overnight stays in which you bring and pitch your own tent at a designated or permitted site. This does not include glamping, lodge accommodation, permanent tented camps, or any other form of pre-erected shelter.
All the places listed in our directory offer this type of camping, whether indicated on their websites or not. We have meticulously checked with owners and managers so you don't have to.

Before You Pitch That Tent
Hard-won wisdom from years of camping.
It's worth listening to hard-won wisdom from people who have years of camping experience in places that are challenging. The Kenyan wild is truly wild, so listening to local rangers and other experts is vital for everyone's safety and fun.
Respect the Heavyweights
🐘
🌡️
The warmth of the equator is a lie at altitude, especially when the sun sets. Nairobi sits at 1,700m. Mount Kenya campsites hit 4°C at night even in high season. Bring a sleeping bag rated to -5°C. You'll thank us.
Kenya Can Still Freeze You
💧
Carry twice what you think you need. In the semi-arid rangelands of Kenya, temperatures and evaporation rates are high. A water filter or purification tablets for river sources are also worth taking for emergency use.
Water Is the Whole Game

Many campsites book up fast — especially Ndololo in Tsavo, Amboseli sites, and anywhere near the Mara during July–October migration. Walk-ins at popular sites will break your heart.

Don't wander camp at night without a torch and some noise. Alert a ranger if you hear unusual movement nearby. The night is extraordinary out here — just respect who owns it.
The Night Belongs to Wildlife
🌿
Pack back everything you brought with you. Don't cut firewood from the bush. Kenya's wilderness is a gift conserved for future generations. Don't be the person who ruins it for everyone who comes after.
Leave It Exactly as You Found It
