If you aspire to explore diverse landscapes in Kenya on your safari or camping trips, then without a doubt, Shaba National Reserve is a must-visit. The scenery is unparalleled, featuring everything from white to orange-hued soil interspersed with long stretches of volcanic black, to natural springs that hold small pools of native fish in an almost desert-like landscape (one wonders how they ever found their way there!). Shaba is also home to the “Samburu Five,” which includes the elegant gerenuk with its mysteriously long neck, and the imposing Bodich Mountain across the Ewaso Nyiro River. It's simply a feast for the eyes, and it won't take long for the area's charm to reveal itself.
There are a small number of campsites located in the reserve, each slightly different but set along the banks of the Ewaso. Don’t expect any amenities—you’ll need to be fully self-sufficient—and note that you’ll need to have 1-2 game wardens accompany you at whichever campsite you choose. We recommend Bodich Campsite, as the views of the mountain by the same name are captivating and make for an epic backdrop. If you camp at Shaba, we also recommend visiting Sarova Shaba Lodge (closer to the gate) for a refreshing dip in the pool and a hot meal. Additionally, your park entry fees will allow you to visit Shaba’s two "sister" national reserves, Samburu and Buffalo Springs. It's worth taking a game drive in both; along the Ewaso in Samburu and straight to the springs (also called 'Buffalo Springs,' after which the reserve is named) for a dip in the clear, refreshing waters. As a challenge, learn about the interesting history behind their formation!
