Ol Pejeta Conservancy—a 360 square kilometer private wildlife sanctuary in the Laikipia region of Kenya—symbolizes the dramatic transformation of this area over the past few decades. Like many conservancies in Laikipia, Ol Pejeta was once a settler cattle ranch. Many ranch owners have since dedicated their vast lands either entirely to conservation and ecotourism or to exploring a hybrid model of conservation and ranching. It is inspiring to learn about the remarkable recovery of wildlife; the Laikipia region now boasts the largest concentration of wildlife on privately owned land in Kenya. There has been a resurgence of the wild dog population, although it was severely and sadly affected by an outbreak of dysentery several years ago. Additionally, elephant migration routes have been re-established between this region and Samburu to the north.

Ol Pejeta is excellently managed and ideal for children, offering a variety of learning opportunities, including visits to the chimpanzee sanctuary. Knowledgeable guides provide tailored presentations for students or families. For instance, on one trip, students learned about genetics through the work being done to protect the Northern White Rhino from extinction. Information about the park is well presented, and signage is well maintained. There are also several camping opportunities, and we recommend Ewaso Campsite. It is surrounded on three sides by the winding Ewaso River and offers excellent birding without having to leave the campsite! A secure live electric fence protects the fourth side, and numerous tall trees provide ample options for setting up camp.
