Formed by glacial activity, Lake Michaelson sits at an elevation of over 4,300 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest lakes (and campsites) in Kenya. The lake itself teems with trout, and combined with the unmistakable beauty of the surrounding cliffs that form the upper reaches of Gorge’s Valley, it creates a true fisherman’s paradise. Diverse flora have adapted to the high-altitude environment, and you’ll enjoy the signature moorland vegetation that dots the landscape on your trek towards the lake.

Campers can pitch their tents along the lakeshore or in designated camping areas. Lake Michaelson serves as a base camp for hikers and mountaineers exploring the peaks of Mount Kenya, providing a tranquil retreat amidst the raw, rugged beauty of the mountain. If you stay here, be sure to make time for a walk around the lake; the lake’s outlet forms a series of intriguing waterfalls that will not disappoint, and you’ll be amazed by the clarity of the water. At night, look up to witness the inspiring spectacle of stars dancing in the sky!
