As one of the oldest national parks in Kenya, Nairobi National Park boasts a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1946. Lions Ridge Campsite is located just south of the park, across the Mbagathi River, which officially separates the park (and Nairobi County) from the surrounding communities and private lands. If you’re looking for a convenient getaway camping destination within reach of the city, this could be the perfect spot for you!
The campsite is named after the resident lion population in Nairobi National Park, which is visible from certain vantage points within the campsite. While it is rare, be mindful that lions may occasionally visit the campsite itself (as was our experience), so it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings at all times, especially during walks down to the river.
The campsite provides basic amenities such as restroom facilities and water access. There are numerous attractions nearby, including Kitengela Glass and Ololo Lodge (which offers truly fantastic lunches but must be booked in advance). Be sure to take a walk around the sanctuary at night (with a ranger, of course) and enjoy the view of the city lights!
