Mount Suswa is simply enchanting, with the “Lost Forest” in its inner crater shrouded in mystery. Sacred to the Maasai, one can only imagine which animals remain undisturbed on the forest floor or leap among the canopy. Our Maasai guide shared that when he was a child, cheetahs were often spotted in this area. The campsite is located on the rim of the inner crater, with views out to the peak of the mountain.

In addition to the astounding views and serene atmosphere, Mount Suswa offers excellent hiking opportunities around the rim. Hikers can choose between a shorter 2-hour hike to the mountain peak or a longer 8-hour trek around the entire rim. The very large caldera features two craters: a larger outer rim where the local community resides and an inner rim encircling the “Lost Forest.” Biking is possible in the outer rim, but one would need to chart their own trails along the few available roads and walking paths. Additionally, just a few kilometers away, visitors can access one of the longest lava tubes in the world.
