Mugie Conservancy was originally established as a cattle ranch in the early 20th century but has since evolved into a conservation area. Although it is somewhat off the beaten path, it is well worth the trip and accessible via the road from Rumuriti to Maralal. The main campsite is situated under a giant acacia tree and near one of the conservancy’s largest dams. The conservancy offers excellent game drives through savannah and acacia woodlands—be sure to watch out for puff adders! The birdlife is abundant and diverse. If you stay at Mugie, be sure to visit the main lodge, which features scenic gardens and wonderful accommodation options, if your budget allows.
