Mwea National Reserve may feel like an oddity due to its location—far from the traditional wildlife areas of the country—but therein lies its charm. Situated in central Kenya along the banks of the massive Masinga Reservoir and south of Embu, you might wonder how the park’s abundant wildlife population thrives in this area. The reserve offers first-time campers the chance to explore a unique, yet rich ecosystem and camp along the banks of a vast reservoir.

Established in 1979, the reserve encompasses a series of wetlands fed by the Tana River. Historically, the area served as a traditional hunting ground for the Agikuyu community and was later developed into a conservation area to protect its natural resources. Campers can pitch their tents in designated camping areas within the reserve, enjoying scenic views of the reservoir and the surrounding plains.

Mwea National Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and monkeys, making it an ideal destination for wildlife enthusiasts. It is also teeming with birdlife—be sure to carry your camera, as you will not be disappointed. There are no facilities, so come prepared!
