There are few national parks in Kenya as remote and unique as Ndere Island. Situated in Lake Victoria, it is a short boat ride from the shore (organized by KWS) and is completely uninhabited. This pristine island ecosystem is perfect for hikers. You’ll enjoy the grassland savannah, interspersed with trees, and the views of the surrounding lake and its dotted islands nearby.
The island is home to a variety of wildlife, including impalas, monkeys, and hippos. Some of the wildlife was translocated to the island to provide them with a protected habitat. Campers can pitch their tents in designated camping areas. On your drive in or out, be sure to stop at the famous ‘Kit Mikayi’ rock formation, which stands an impressive 40 meters high!
