If you’re planning to ascend Elephant Hill or Kinangop, a camping option is available at the 'Point of Despair,' several kilometers into the hike. Let’s be clear—climbing Elephant Hill is no joke. This opening on a hill above the bamboo line earned its name due to the reputation of this particular hike for being arduous and challenging. It is situated between the two most difficult stretches of the hike. You will have just completed a very steep section through towering bamboo. However, you may encounter 'despair' when you realize what lies ahead—the ascent up the tail of Elephant Hill itself, which features an almost 45-degree incline in several parts.
That being said, camping at the 'Point of Despair' provides a unique and optional way to break up the two most challenging portions of the journey, and the scenery is quite impressive as well! You'll be treated to views of Sasumua Dam in the foreground and, on clear days, as far as Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha in the background—not bad at all!
